Studying Climate Change at the Edge of the World

As part of the PONANT EXPLORATIONS Science program, 20 scientists undertook the first-ever Transarctic crossing aboard Le Commandant Charcot in 2024, an unprecedented journey from Nome to Longyearbyen. Their mission: to collect data to deepen our understanding of the Arctic environment in the face of climate change.

Meet Dr. Megan Clampitt,
Keeping the Spirit of Earth Day Alive Every Day
Step aboard a PONANT EXPLORATIONS expedition and experience groundbreaking science, firsthand. Our Science Manager, Dr. Megan Clampitt—a marine scientist and coral reef expert—leads the creation of onboard programs that keep the spirit of Earth Day alive every day. Discover more in Escales.

I hope to share my passion for the ocean with others and encourage people to play a role in conservation efforts

PONANT Science:
Support Projects
Since 2021, nearly thirty projects have been carried out by around a hundred scientists on board. These are just a few.
Documenting the Impact of Nanoparticles
Studying nanoparticles in the Southern Ocean helps us understand their impact on marine life and on the exchange of materials between organisms.
Documenting the Impact of Nanoparticles
Defining Krill Sanctuaries for Whales
Defining Krill Sanctuaries for Whales
Researchers record whale populations to estimate the amount of food they need and guide plankton fishing quotas.
Studying Ocean Circulation
Scientists use sensors to collect seawater samples to understand how the Arctic Ocean is responding to climate change.
Study Ocean Circulation
Deoxygenation of the Oceans in the Arctic
Deoxygenation of the Oceans in the Arctic
By analyzing oxygen, zooplankton, and microplastic levels, we can better understand the effects of climate change.

A Luxury Icebreaker Built with
Science in Mind

Innovation for the Environment

RECYCLED ENERGY
Outdoor benches along the promenade are heated with recycled energy
CERTIFICATION
Clean Ship Certification by Bureau Veritas
LIQUEFIED NATURAL GAS
The only ship in the world to be able to run on LNG for a month and a half
RESPECTFUL ECOSYSTEMS
Capable of detecing the seafloor, uses electronic positioning system without the need for anchoring

We had to imagine, develop and design everything from A to Z. No ship like Le Commandant Charcot had ever seen the light of day. Going to such privileged environments without limiting our impact as much as possible was out of the question.
